The need: outside play spaces where kids can connect with nature
Today, kids play outside less than any other generation. Even adults can’t always find time to get outside. We live in a world of busy schedules and easy access to digital media. And there’s evidence that interacting with nature can have tremendous benefits for kids.
That’s why Wildrock is creating a space where families and communities can experience therapeutic nature play, connections with nature, and family bonding.
The solution: a natural retreat with plenty of places for creative play

Located on 28 acres of land just outside Charlottesville, Wildrock will be a natural retreat open to the public.
Wildrock will be founded on the belief that everyone should be able to easily access a space to play in and reconnect with nature. Begun in 2016 by the Schuyler family, it will be a place where you are free to catch tadpoles in a stream, explore hideaways in the rocks, stare at the stars, and gather with friends around a campfire.
Martha’s Meadow Playscape
Building Goodness Foundation has partnered with Wildrock to create some of the structures that will turn the area known as Martha’s Meadow into an interactive playscape.
Fun structures including a child-sized nest, a stage, and a log obstacle course will be integrated into the natural landscape and will encourage children to engage with their surroundings and peers.
In addition to Martha’s Meadow, visitors will enjoy:
- The Barn learning center
- Hiking trails
- A walking labyrinth
- Campgrounds
