Incentive Kays (houses)
Location: Haiti
Timeline: 2003-present / in progress
Partner: CODEP Haiti
http://haitifundinc.org/
Budget: $25,500 per year
Anticipated community impacts:
- Reforestation in Haiti, where 12-15 million trees have been planted since CODEP began
- Better soil for subsistence farming
- More crops for farmers to sell
- Empowering the 1500 CODEP participants, 60% of whom are women
BGF volunteers and local Haitian crews build Incentive Kays (“homes”) in partnership with Haiti Fund’s Comprehensive Development Project. Haitian families earn kays by planting trees, gardens, and erosion-controlling hedgerows; sending their children to school; installing water cisterns; and tending fish hatcheries.
Each 12′ x 20′ home represents years of participation in CODEP by each new homeowner. The pressure-treated, hurricane- and termite-proof homes reward the families for years of hard work: Each family plants an average of 50,000 trees to earn a kay. To date, we have built 32 incentive kays.
