International Volunteer Coordinator / Recruiter

Position Summary
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruitment of BGF volunteers and helping maintain a vibrant and active volunteer community serving through BGF construction projects. S/he Introduces volunteers to opportunities to use their skills, or learn new skills, in the process of achieving BGF’s mission and core values. Responsibilities include recruitment, training, placing, coordinating, assessing, recognizing and re-engaging BGF volunteers for international projects, and collaboration with the BGF Local Volunteer Coordinator to ensure the health of BGF’s volunteer base.
Reports to: Executive Director
Method of Compensation, Benefits and Reimbursements:
- Full- Time: Annual Salary with 26 pay periods per year, salary range $32k – $38k annually, depending on qualifications and previous experience
- Employer paid benefits – Health Insurance, government FICA and Workers Compensation
- Personal Leave – three weeks per year
- Paid Holidays – six (6) per calendar year
- Cell Phone – monthly stipend for use of personal cell phone
- Mileage – personal vehicle used for work transportation reimbursed at IRS published rate
- FLSA Status: Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, some evenings and weekends required.
Working Conditions:
General office environment. Driving to meetings up to several hours away. Required to talk, sit, stand, stoop, bend, reach, lift and walk. Regular use of computer screen and communication devices to complete tasks.
Domestic travel for recruiting and international travel to developing countries may be encouraged and required at times.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruiting for the BGF volunteer base
- Reach out to the construction community for volunteer recruitment
- Cultivate new relationships with individual volunteers and contractors who approach BGF
- Arrange office or jobsite coffee meetings for recruitment
- Get to know and keep active volunteers and contractors
- Encourage invested volunteers to recruit friends
- Engage the BGF board and active volunteers to help with outreach and recruiting of new volunteers with the needed skills
- Engage the BGF staff as a resource in volunteer cultivation and recruiting as needed to improve outcomes
- Represent BGF at construction industry trade group meetings
- Coordinating the BGF Volunteer Base
- Assist the Projects Director with recruiting special skill sets to fill volunteer spots (local, out of town and international) for each project in its various phases of construction
- Shepherd international groups from start to finish (initial recruitment to post-trip debrief)
- Publicize fundraising and scholarship opportunities
- Designate an Incident Commander for incident management of each traveling team, inform Trip Leaders and Incident Commander with contact information and responsibilities.
- Organize systems for tracking scholarships, supporting and tracking volunteers who fundraise for their trips
Developing the BGF Volunteer Base:
- Support volunteer recognition and appreciation activities
- Coordinate and share leadership of Pre-trip with Trip Leaders
- Perform post-trip debrief with leader and volunteers
- Develop and sustain healthy Team Leader pool, through supporting Leadership committee and trainees selection, grow in familiarity with the NOLS/BGF training method
- Support Trip Leader trainings and events with the Leadership Committee
Volunteer Communications:
- Understand and speak to the BIG IDEAS of BGF to the volunteer community
- Be the voice of the organization when necessary, tell the stories
- Communicate the Mission and Core Values
- Keep information flowing to make things happen
- Support mass communication / social networking methods – Newsletter, E-blasts, Facebook, and Twitter for volunteer recruitment and BGiA and Local volunteer events
- Reply to “cold” calls and emails from potential volunteers
- Support fundraising from volunteer base
- Provide content for trip fliers and trip handbooks
- When possible, be present on BGF project sites to interact with the volunteer community
- Make volunteer calls for thanks to all volunteers who have traveled
- Take action on feedback from trip evals as it relates to pre- and post- trip experience
Administrative:
- Contribute content to keep the website current
- Provide data needed to keep the Giftworks volunteer database current
Job Description: Assist in development and maintenance of robust volunteer management information system in GiftWorks, organizing the system for ready access to information to support recruitment, placement, management, evaluation and recognition of volunteers.

BGF Committee Participation:
- Volunteer Committee – providing volunteer capacity critical info to inform committee decision-making
- Leadership Committee – providing volunteer capacity critical info to inform committee decision-making
Supervisory Responsibilities: Managing volunteers dedicated to supporting the work of the Director of Volunteer Programs
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:
- Previous experience with volunteer management and service work
- Knowledge of and experience with travel in the developing world
- Experience with booking travel and arranging group trip logistics
- Solid computer skills including expertise with standard office software packages and database management.
- Proficiency in using social networking services
- Strong personal skills including ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing.
Education and Experience:
- Prior experience recruiting and managing volunteer groups is desired
- Must have experience to show a commitment to, and belief in, service work and volunteerism
- Working in the construction industry and having a knowledge of the construction workforce within the region
- Continuing education through classes, seminars and conferences in managing people, leadership development, risk management, and construction management is encouraged
- Experience traveling in developing countries for service work, specifically Haiti and Central or South America would be viewed positively
