The need: a building that is fully accessible to everyone
Crozet Arts is a non-profit organization that is committed to making the arts available to people from all walks of life. After opening their doors in 2009 in the Old Crozet School building, they have offered classes on everything from drawing to ballet to Tai Chi (太极拳).
Unfortunately, the Crozet Arts studio space is difficult to access due to the stairs found at both of the entrances. While a concern for any and all who visit, it has been especially troublesome for people who use wheelchairs, walkers, or other aids, including members of their board of directors and relatives of students performing in recitals.
Phase 1: a wheelchair-friendly sidewalk
To make the building more accessible, Building Goodness Foundation will construct a sidewalk that bypasses the stairs. With a wheelchair-accessible path to the door, patrons and board members can get in the building much more easily.
Phase 2: An ADA-compliant bathroom
The renovation work inside the building will focus on making the bathroom more accessible by installing a new, wider door to enter the bathroom and moving the fixtures to be compliant with the guidelines for ADA compliance. While the facilities are currently challenging for someone with a wheelchair or walker, renovations will make it usable for everyone.
We are grateful to Michael Osteen for his architectural drawings and designs for both the sidewalk and ADA compliant bathroom. Both phases of the project will be led by longtime BGF volunteer, Michael Gallahue.
