Building Goodness Foundation has always had a strong commitment to women’s health. In the international arena, we have worked to increase the health and wellbeing of women by constructing birth centers and medical clinics to serve women in Haiti, Liberia, and El Salvador. In 2016, we are happy to expand our commitment to women’s health care to our local work by donating construction labor to Planned Parenthood in Charlottesville.
The need: a comfortable, safe space for patients to wait
Planned Parenthood is an invaluable resource, particularly for low-income women, for access to basic medical care and family planning. We know from first-hand experience through our international work in women’s health how crucial these resources are to enable low-income women to better their own lives, as well as the lives of their family members.
Our local Planned Parenthood health center serves many patients every day, and they are often accompanied by family or friends. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting often exceeds the seating capacity of the waiting room. This leaves some with no choice but to wait in the parking lot.
The solution: renovated waiting space
To address this issue, Building Goodness Foundation is remodeling both the outside and the inside of the Planned Parenthood building to expand their seating capacity inside and provide comfortable options outdoors.
Phase 1: an outdoor waiting area with leafy, natural barriers
The first half of the renovations will create a sheltered outdoor area where patients can wait instead of in the parking lot. The waiting area will create a pleasant, relaxing environment, using natural leafy barriers instead of fences.
Phase 2: renovations to the current waiting room
To address the small size of the current waiting room, the second half of the project will focus on the inside of the building. The new waiting room will accommodate many more of the clinic’s patients and their families, while also creating better opportunities for patients to speak privately with intake coordinators.
We are happy to be working with the award-winning landscape architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz and the interior space consultants at Attainable Spaces to complete this project.
Once the renovations are complete, patients at the clinic will have a safe, undisturbed place to wait for the medical care they need.
